Product Overview

On a high-volume SMT line, four fast placement heads only create value when PCB transfer, material preparation and product changeovers do not leave the machine waiting. Multiple used ASM SIPLACE D4i units are available with different camera packages, conveyor configurations, feeder equipment, software and machine condition. The best unit is the one that supports both the required placement load and the way boards actually move through the customer's line.

The D4i uses four 12-nozzle Collect & Place heads. Original documentation lists 57,000 CPH under IPC conditions, 66,000 CPH under the SIPLACE benchmark and 81,500 CPH as the theoretical maximum. With the standard camera configuration, the head is focused on small and medium standard components. 01005 placement down to approximately 0.4 × 0.2 mm requires the corresponding high-resolution camera, dedicated package, nozzles, compatible feeders and supporting software.

The D4i also provides production features that protect output between placement cycles. A flexible dual conveyor can run synchronously or asynchronously, allowing two-board handling or independent PCB transfer where the product benefits from it. Four removable component tables can be prepared away from active production, helping reduce the amount of machine time consumed during feeder setup and product changeover.

The D4i is a strong fit for component-dense production where small and medium SMD placement is a major part of the cycle and the line can benefit from four-gantry output. It is not the best standalone choice for products dominated by large connectors, tall parts or heavy odd-shaped components. Buyers comparing D Series machines should use the SIPLACE D Series range to decide whether high-speed chip placement or broader component flexibility is the more important requirement.

SIPLACE D4i Production Setup for Short-Cycle Lines

Production FactorHow the D4i Can Help
Short PCB placement cyclesAsynchronous dual-lane transport can reduce time lost while the next board enters or the completed board leaves the machine.
Frequent product changesRemovable component tables allow the next feeder setup to be prepared while the current product is still running.
High count of small SMD placementsFour C&P12 heads provide the placement capacity needed to keep small-component work from becoming the main cycle-time bottleneck.
01005 productionThe optional high-resolution camera and 01005 package extend the platform to ultra-small components when the complete required setup is present.
Long placement cycles on one large PCBDual-lane transport may add little value when board-transfer time represents only a small part of the total cycle.

For a used D4i, high output should be verified as a complete system. Stable operation of all four heads, correct vision configuration, feeder pickup, PCB transport and software setup matter more than the theoretical 81,500 CPH figure shown in the original specification.

The D4i is most valuable when the factory can use both sides of its design: four-head placement capacity and efficient material and PCB flow. Current configuration information, powered-on operation and available test evidence should be reviewed before the final machine is selected.
